Summer Styling: The Trends to Wear Now
What to wear for summer’s steamy second half
By: Georgia GrahamThe ‘Dog Days’ of summer refers to the period where the season is at its zenith: those steamy days that fall between July and early September, where we all lounge around like dogs in the heat. It can feel like summer will last forever, in all its hot, languid glory. But sadly, that’s not the case. As we inch further into August, September begins to creep onto the horizon, turning our minds to the return to reality. Whether you’re making the most of the late summer days, or preparing yourself mentally (and sartorially) for the real world - these are the trends that will take you there.
Retro Holiday
In the UK, summer arrived fashionably late this year. A lacklustre June paved the way for a stunning late surge in July, which means we’re finally feeling excited about summer dressing. Especially with the arrival of some retro-inspired holiday pieces. Textured shirts have a vintage, 60s feel - the styling equivalent of a nostalgic photograph shot on film. Pair with short trunks and retro sunglasses for the full Talented Mr Ripley effect.

Form and Function
Summer is a season characterised by ease. It brings out the effortless side in all of us, stripping us back to a more fuss-free, relaxed version of ourselves. Although we can’t make the weather last, we can harness this attitude in easygoing pieces that are both practical and stylish. Start with some roomy chinos and a crisp white tee. Add a utilitarian blazer or shirt for evening, or a vintage-inspired sweatshirt for a retro touch (see above).

Elegance is Best
It’s hard to tout tailoring as a trend - our neighbours on Savile Row have been at it since the 1800s. But this season welcomes a return to a softer, more sensual point of view, with elegant pieces from the likes of Our Legacy, Paul Smith and Belgian icon Dries Van Noten. Add a delicately printed pocket square for an artistic touch. Alternatively, Issey Miyake’s signature pleats are a modern classic - light and breezy, but smart enough for a formal event.

Another trend to help you keep the summer spirit alive (even as its end draws near) is this season’s knitwear, whose bright colours will elongate your sunny state of mind. Colour blocking and tactile textures keep things cheerful - especially the always-whimsical Jonathan Anderson. This multicoloured stripy jumper from the British designer’s namesake label combines his love of craft and colour, with its ‘knitted by nana’ feel and charming pastel hues.
