Looking to transform your comfiest clothes into far-from-shabby outfits you’ll want to wear out and about? Team Liberty shares their tips and tricks
By: George ElliotMuch more than a flippant remark, the ‘no pain, no gain’ mantra has long dictated what we wear. History books recall how we’d squeeze ourselves into body suffocating corsets; there once was a time when shirt collars were starched to suffocating extremes; and not so long ago, blood-flow-limiting skinny jeans reigned supreme – all in the name of looking good. But that was then. Now, thanks in part to an attitude that’s been flourishing since the rise of streetwear and days of the pandemic, keeping up with fashion no longer means sacrificing comfort – not if you take a lesson in how to dress-up loungewear. All about elevating your wardrobe’s cosiest, easy-going pieces with a little strategic layering and styling together the unexpected, here’s how Team Liberty turn their off-duty staples into on-duty outfits…

“I think there’s a real importance to dressing for comfort because when you’re physically at ease, your mindset improves and you feel instantly more focused. Ultimately, cosy clothes give you the freedom to move, think and be without unnecessary hindrances, but don’t be fooled by the common misconception that wearing loungewear means sacrificing personal style standards. First, pick out the comfy clothes you want to wear and then start to add layers of interest, like a blouse, some tailoring and a sleek winter coat. Try to incorporate some seasonal trends into your outfit, too, and always remember: a statement bag, some jewellery and the right pair of shoes can elevate even the simplest of outfits.”

“When it comes to getting dressed, comfort is my ultimate priority, as on a daily basis I can go from running errands and attending meetings to scaling ladders and styling Liberty's window displays (which requires me to contort myself into some rather confined spots, I might add). That’s why I always avoid anything tight-fitting and instead opt for pieces that let me move freely, like oversized knitwear and jeans with plenty of legroom. Dressing for comfort doesn't mean being lazy, though. Be selective and wear items that come inbuilt with interesting touches, like trousers with dramatic turn-ups or a roll-neck accented with metal hardware. Then furnish your fingers with some chunky rings and spray on your signature feel-good fragrance. The result: an outfit that’s as soothing and functional as it is fashionable.”

“When deciding on an outfit in the morning I tend to put comfort first – especially in the winter when it's so cold and grey! But I also find that I get the most compliments when I take a ‘risk’ with my outfits and go outside my, ahem, comfort zone. And who doesn't like getting those? That’s why I like my outfits to strike a balance between the two and contrast smart elements with those on the more casual side. Try teaming plush knitwear and effortless t-shirts with a leather skirt and loafers. Or style together a quilted jacket with a dressy shirt for the perfect clash.”
