This week’s note comes from Sissi Freeman, part of the family behind Granado, and the company’s sales and marketing director. Known for its exuberant designs and transportive scents, Granado’s perfumes are inspired by the rich heritage of its Brazilian homeland, as well as its own historical roots, originally being founded in Rio de Janeiro 1870.
With Granado’s Tonka candle waiting in this year’s calendar: Sissi Freeman spoke to us from Rio, to give us a unique insight into the brand and its history.
Notes From Sissi Freeman
How would describe the brand in one sentence?
Granado is Brazil’s most traditional perfumery founded in 1870 in Rio de Janeiro and cherished by generations.
What’s one thing you’ve learned in your time at Granado, that you wish you had known sooner?
Certainly, it was the importance of preserving traditions and our Brazilian identity. Just as the founder of the company sought out the biodiversity of our native plants, I delved into the brand's history to recapture that essence!
Why did you create the Tonka Candle?
Tonka is one of Granado’s most iconic scents. The tonka bean, also known as cumaru, is a 100% native Brazilian plant that is very similar to vanilla. We wanted to expand the fragrance range to include home scents, so that people who love Tonka can experience the fragrance in different ways.
What’s your favourite thing about the product?
All of our candles are handcrafted with 100% natural coconut wax and contain a high level of natural-origin ingredients. For me, this indicates that we can produce great products while also caring for the environment.
Do you have a signature scent – if so, what is it?
I love comfortable, 'second skin’ fragrances and for the past two years I had only worn Nostalgia. Recently, I fell in love with Esplendor, our 2024 launch that is one of our first gourmands that mixes woods, cashmere, sophisticated natural vanilla and a salty marine note that gives it a lot of personality.
When it comes to advent calendars: are you an “open all at once” or a “strictly one day at a time” person?
I love advent calendars! It isn’t easy, since I am very curious, but I try to take it one day at a time. I am passionate about fragrances and enjoy having a whole new experience each day as I open and discover a different product.
