Sissi Freeman’s Life in Fragrance

From lost loves to signature scents, the daughter of Brazilian perfumer Granado’s founder shares her hero perfumes and most memorable moments wearing them

With over 150 years of perfumery expertise at its back, Granado is a Brazilian institution. Although, you would be forgiven for not realising the extent of its heritage, as the storied brand is a relative newcomer to the UK, having launched its wares exclusively with Liberty in 2022.

Founded by José Antonio Coxito Granado in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro in 1870, the brand began life selling natural remedies created from the flora and fauna of the local region. Such was its renowned, it was made the official pharmacy of the Brazilian Royal Family in 1880.

As times changed, so did Granado, and in 2004 the brand began creating colognes and perfumes, with this new iteration of the brand founded by Christopher Freeman. Known for its exuberant designs and transportive scents, Granado’s perfumes are inspired by the rich heritage of its Brazilian homeland, as well as its own historical roots.

Today, the brand remains in family hands, with Sissi Freeman, Christopher’s daughter, acting as director of marketing and sales.

As their pop-up launches in Liberty's Atrium, we sat down with Sissi to find out her Fragrance Story...

SISSI FREEMAN'S LIFE IN FRAGRANCE

The first fragrance I ever loved was…
Cristalle by Chanel brings back wonderful childhood memories and will always put me in a festive mood! It was my mother´s fragrance for special occasions when I was growing up as well as my best friend Juliana´s choice for parties and concerts during High School.
Personally, I have always loved musky, fresh creations and for years alternated between the original 212 Carolina Herrera and Calvin Klein One.

The best day of my life smelled like…
Lavanda by Granado Brazilians are very supersticious and lavender is believed to bring good luck. For my wedding and when my daughters were christened I had candles made as gifts for guests with this delicate, floral and aromatic scent. Lavanda always reminds me of these very special occasions.

My current signature scent is….
Nostalgia by Granado has been my signature since 2021, a year before the launch! I love that it has a lot of personality, but is elegant and intimate due to its comfortable Cashmeran and Ambery notes. My daughters say they spritz the fragrance on when they miss me!

The next perfume I’d like to wear is…
I have always stayed far away from Gourmand notes but Esplendor by Granado has surprisingly completely changed my perception! The new launch was inspired by a luminous summer afternoon in Rio and is a blend of sophisticated balsamic vanilla with addictive salty tropical notes. I have a sample on my desk that I love wearing before leaving the office for a dinner date!
