A Walk on the Wild Side: The Liberty Menagerie

From cats to creepy crawlies, these are the animal-themed accessories and trends causing a buzz

By: Madeleine Killick

Since its door first opened, Liberty has established itself as “the chosen resort of the artistic shopper” (as Oscar Wilde once put it). Steeped in heritage, the Tudor flagship has been the go-to destination for unique ornaments, luxurious fabrics, and exquisite objets d’art. Not only that, but Liberty also welcomes the animal enthusiasts among us.

From the majestic pair of Chinese guardian lions that stand watch at the front entrance, to the carved wooden animals hidden around the shop, Liberty is a menagerie all of its own. While founder, Arthur Lasenby Liberty, had the Regent Street store built using the timbers of two Royal Navy ships, today it could easily be mistaken for Noah’s Ark, given the profusion of animal-themed products that fill the shop.

Whether you’re an exotic animal lover or the proud owner of a four-legged friend, look no further than our collection of cute and quirky, animal-inspired pieces to enhance your own den.

Animal Prints

What could be more iconic than the flock of thrushes picking at fruit in William Morris’s iconic Strawberry Thief print? A Liberty classic and a perennial favourite since 1979, this beloved Arts and Crafts design, created in 1883, continues to adorn our Tana Lawn™, as well as a wide array of products, including bedding, diaries, nightwear, and sewing accessories. Birds aren’t the only species to have graced our fabrics. Past and present collections have featured giraffes, dalmatians, flying fish, and even dinosaurs.

Fabled Footstools

From spaniels to sheep, whales, bears, and beyond, Omersa’s distinctive, rich brown leather footstools are a cherished part of Liberty’s heritage. In 1927, Dimitri Omersa, then a luggage maker at Liberty, crafted the first footstool shaped like a pig from leftover leather. Nearly a century - and 39 animals - later, Liberty continues to celebrate Omersa’s craftsmanship.

The Curated Pet

Regardless of whether you prefer moggies or labradoodles, Liberty is packed with pet inspired pieces that you’re bound to love. Anya Hindmarch’s recent collaboration with Peanuts showcased a cheery range of leather goods featuring the world’s most famous beagle, Snoopy. If you want a delightfully quirky piece as unique as your own pet, check out Astier de Villatte’s Setsuko Large Cat Teapot - just be careful not to leave it in sight of any real life felines!

Birds of a Feathered Cushion

There’s nothing quite as comfortable or luxurious as lounging on a plush feather cushion. So why not go one step further and elevate your space with a statement cushion featuring a charming feathered friend? Home may be where the heart is, but adding a peacock, phoenix, or tropical crowned crane to your sofa will instantly transform your environment into an aviary of its own.

Beautiful Bugs

Whether they have wings, scales, or multiple legs, no ecosystem is complete without insects - and they deserve a special place in your own kingdom as well. While creepy crawlies may not be for everyone, whimsical decor like a Bordallo Pinheiro butterfly-shaped bowl or Konstantinos Chalaris’ Ianthe Beetle Print bring a touch of Liberty magic to your interiors, celebrating the beauty of nature in a playful and inviting way that's anything but intimidating.
