RSVP Rotate: Rotate Birger Christensen’s Guide to Party Dressing
Founders Jeanette and Thora share their tips for dialling up the glamour this season
If anything could be considered an antidote to January, it might just be the glam, elegant and dramatic stylings of ROTATE Birger Christensen. Founded by Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimarsdottir, the Danish brand is known for its alternative silhouettes and mastery of the partywear genre. Far from being confined to the festive season, what better way to bring optimism to the dark days of winter than with a hint of sultry glam.
Whether you're shopping for an upcoming occasion or searching for something to boost your winter wardrobe, ROTATE's eye-catching styles have just landed at Liberty, with a pop-up on the Third Floor in store. As the brand gets ready to show its next collection at Copenhagen Fashion Week, Jeanette and Thora sat down with Liberty to give us their top tips for bringing a hint of glam to every occasion.
What new season trends are you most excited to wear this season?
Thora: I am loving the drama of floor length dresses and if it has a train even better!
Jeanette: Sleek and elegant is the direction I have been choosing for this party season.
What are your favourite pieces from ROTATE's collection at Liberty? How will you be styling them?
J: The Lace Draped Top and Black Lace Long Midi Skirt from our Holiday collection are my favourites. You can wear them alone, and style them up or down, or wear it together for a full look. The simple floral lace and dark sequins are subtly glamourous, and so I would style this look with simple stiletto heels and minimal jewellery for a chic look.
T: I love the Mini Ruched Long Sleeve dress, it is flirty and fun, whilst it’s simple colour scheme makes it perfect for styling! I would pair this with some fun shoes and bold jewellery for a festive outfit.
What are your golden rules for party dressing?
T: For me it is all about feeling comfortable. In the winter, when I am a bit pale, I will always choose something with a long sleeve or length, because I just feel more comfortable when I am a bit covered up – but if I remember to spray tan then I will get my legs out! Generally, I try to balance my look so that if I have my legs out, I cover my arms and vice versa.
J: I have no rules, but I do always need a pair of heels, that makes me feel ready for a party!
Do you have any tips and tricks you think people should know for party season?
T: Focus on choosing the right accessories. When in doubt, go for a simple, elegant dress but dress it up with accessories.
J: It’s all about balancing the look, if you have a lot going on at the top, then go for simple bottoms and shoes, and if you have loud pants or shoes, go for a simple top, if you have legs out, then maybe cover arms. It all depends on the outfit, but it’s important to find the right recipe!
If you really don’t know what to wear to an event: where do you look for inspiration?
J: I take a look through my wardrobe and find inspiration from pieces I’ve worn before – either wearing them again and styling them differently, or getting inspired to create a completely new look based off an old one.
T: I look at Pinterest or Instagram for inspiration. Often I will try to find someone wearing an item that I have at home to see how they style it and go from there.
What’s your advice for choosing an outfit for an event with no dress code?
T: I will always go for a blazer dress, because it fits in wherever I go or whatever I do. Sometimes it can be a bit awkward if you turn up in a full on party dress to a casual event, but a blazer dress tones down the ‘dress’ part and feels a bit more casual to me. And if the party is more dressy than you guessed, then you are still wearing a dress too!
J: I will always go for a black dress if I do not know the dress code, it is a classic for a reason!
How would you bring a hint of party dressing to dull January days?
J: I love to style a sequin skirt with a soft knit sweater and chunky winter boots - it’s my secret to bring a little sparkle to the cold months.
T: For me it’s all about making something flashy feel effortless - like you just threw them on and walked out the door. Casual yet chic!
Are there any pieces you're looking forward to styling for everyday wear? How will you be doing this?
J: I’m really looking forward to styling some slim jeans with oversized coats. It’s the contrast in playing with shapes that I always go for.
T: I’m loving the idea of layering - any silk style from our new collection under a chunky knit, maybe the bow shirt or a scarf for that extra dimension.
Copenhagen Fashion Week is just around the corner - what trends are you excited to see on the streets of the city?
J: I’m really excited to see how people elevate their everyday outfits to that catch the eye of street style photographers. It’s always so inspiring!
T: For me it’s all about the accessories. I can’t wait to see how people style their winter looks with scarves, hats, gloves, and bold colour combinations - Scandinavian people have such a knack for nailing those details!
And what will you be wearing to your afterparty?
J: I’m thinking anything glamorous - something elegant, and sophisticated. Maybe with a statement fur to top it all off.
T: To be honest, I’m very last minute with these kind of decisions, but it will definitely be something daring, with just the right mix of bold and glamorous.
