While it's clear spring is the season when our obsession for florals really boom, there really isn't a season that goes by where we don’t take to Google in search of the best floral dresses. It seems florals truly are forever. Yes, we wear them because they capture nature's vibrancy and yes, like the flowers they come decked in, there’s an almost limitless variety, but have you ever stopped to really question why we never get bored with florals?
Trace the roots of our fascination and you’ll find that we’ve been wearing flowery fashion for millennia, for as long as patterned textiles have been produced, in fact. Even before it was actually possible to produce floral fabrics, Ancient Greek and Roman women would decorate their draped clothes with scented, freshly picked flowers, suggesting there’s an instinctive, deep seeded allure within us all to wear flora and fauna as a way of bringing the outside in. And it’s not just prints that evidence our longstanding love of all things botanical, either; from the sculptural and fluted lines of lilies to the all-out volume of blossoming peonies, it’s easy to see how the very structure of the minis, midis and maxis we wear today echo the very form of flowers.
