First Time Buyers: Brands We Found First
From beauty powerhouses to renowned fashion labels, meet the brands that we discovered and launched at liberty
By: Emma FowlerIt’s the job of the buyers at Liberty to seek out new brands, procuring and sourcing the freshest, hot-off-the-press talent in order to be able to declare: we saw it first. People continue to make the pilgrimage to our bricks and mortar (or rather, wattle and daub in our Grade II-listed case) store because we’re dedicated to discovery; founder of things, people and labels. Meet the brands who first launched under the wing of our Tudor halls.
Byredo
The Fragrance Tastemaker
Liberty became the first UK stockist of Byredo in 2009, with a counter designed by the brand’s owner Ben Gorham and Swedish architect Christian Halleröd. Propelled into popularity by its cult fragrance line, the brand carries clear influences from Ben’s Indian background with strong ties to creativity, art and lifestyle, establishing a unique position in the market with its lifestyle-led approach to fragrance and beauty.

The Fashion Leader
Jonathan Anderson launched his eponymous label JW Anderson in 2008 and Liberty was the first place to distribute his brand. The androgynous menswear collection, shown off-schedule at London Fashion Week that same year was met with critical acclaim alongside huge commercial success. Womenswear was launched in 2010; fertilised by the same plays on gender norms and snippets of humour for which the designer was already renowned, the brand quickly built a cult following.

The Cult Classic
Le Labo founders Eddie and Fabrice entered the fragrance industry with a vision to break the cycle of soulless scents. Each Le Labo perfume is thoughtfully handcrafted with utmost passion and a distinct intention: to inject feeling and sentiment into every bottle. When we first launched Le Labo, it became a statement to wear their fragrance, like a secret handshake only a few understood. Now, their fragrances are utterly iconic and one of our bestsellers.

The Style Setter
French Designer Isabel Marant launched her fresh, youthful Étoile diffusion line in 2000 as a relaxed alternative to her hugely successful eponymous label. The bohemian element of the mainstay collection diffuses into Étoile, parting with formality in favour of carefree, louche tailoring. Étoile’s flouncy skirts, biker jackets and free-flowing lace dresses are the perfect, deceptively-effortless look for your next party – inimitable Parisian cool-girl style.
