To celebrate the coming Lunar New Year – February 10th 2024 to be exact – Liberty Fabrics have fashioned a capsule collection to welcome the power of the Dragon into our great halls. With celebrations lasting up to 16 days and culminating with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, Chinese New Year celebrations are centred around removing the bad and the old, and welcoming the new and the good. It's a time to worship ancestors and pray for good harvest and fortune for the coming year. That all sounds like a rather positive message to kickstart our 2024 crafting endeavours with Liberty’s Year of the Dragon collection.
The dragon is the 5th animal in the 12-year cycle of the traditional Chinese zodiac signs. A powerful, endlessly energetic creature, the dragon possesses the keenest sense of self amongst all the mythical symbols in Chinese astrology – they’re regarded as the givers of abundance and longevity, yet idealistic and delightfully romantic. Delving into the rich and mystical symbolism of this zodiac sign, our in-house design studio has used an array of traditional mediums, from calligraphy to watercolour, to design a beautiful range of enigmatic prints awash with colour to ring in the New Year.
Take Endless Song, where fearless dragons dance among peony flowers – symbolising wealth and good luck using a multitude of brushstrokes. Or Imperial Sky, originally created for Liberty in 1975, this magnificent pattern depicts soaring dragons amongst traditional Chinese cloud motifs to represent positive energy and good fortune. In Prosperity Story, inspiration was taken from the Dragon and Lion Dance, a form of traditional dance in Asian culture that mimics a lion’s and dragon’s movement in costume, hoping to bring prosperity. All expertly printed on our organic Tana Lawn™ cotton, making the perfect backdrop to your Lunar New Year celebrations. Whether you’re looking to host with the perfect Chinese menu or searching for a parade of presents for a loved one, let Liberty wish you an abundant New Year.
