Brand founder Kate Roath on how the power of meditation combined with supportive ingredients is the real answer to great skin – and how you can get it
Shop Wild SourceThe sights, the smells, the sensations… The twice-daily act of applying your skin care presents the perfect opportunity for a mindful moment – but for many of us, the struggle to remain present results in an overly rushed approach that leaves both the skin and the mind at a loss. Wild Source works under the holistic principle that mental calm and healthy skin are seamlessly intertwined – and here, founder Kate Roath shares the course of action that eased her own stress-induced flare-ups, and tips on how to master skin care in the slow lane…
Research has shown that most people start to see the benefits of meditation on their skin after just two weeks of consistent practice
Rituals, Not Routines
Using the time we spend on skin care every morning and evening can be an amazing way to incorporate mindful practice into your daily life. Reconsider this time your spend on yourself not as something mandatory, but something wholly for you.
Take (At Least) Five
The key to reaping the benefits of meditation is consistency. Taking even just five minutes every day to unwind and calm the mind through meditation will have a huge long-term impact not only on your mental health, but also on your skin.
Acknowledge Your Stress
Stress (and the cortisol it produces) affects every organ of the body, but skin is the only organ we can see – cue flare-ups in various forms. Acknowledging your stress is the first step to making healthy and sustainable changes to your life, encouraging you to slow down and really tune into your body. So often we're encouraged to apply topical creams rather than look internally – at Wild Source, we encourage the opposite.
Prioritise Sleep
Not sleeping well? Your skin’s noticed. Lack of good quality sleep weakens the skin's ability to repair and rejuvenate itself. Poor quality sleep lowers your pH levels which can cause dry skin. On top of this, your blood vessels dilate from a lack of sleep which causes those giveaway panda eyes... However, when we sleep well, our blood flow increases which, in turn, aids skin rejuvenation. Using meditation as part of your beauty ritual is the perfect way to begin the wind down and induce deep and rejuvenating sleep.
A Step by Step
Slowing down your breath is a brilliant way to calm your mind and tap into your inner calm…
- ■ Apply your product of choice – an oil-based cleanser, serum, oil or mask
- ■ While the product sinks into your skin, slowly breathe in for 4, then out for 6. Take note of the scent – how does it make you feel?
- ■ Repeat the breathing exercise as many times as you wish, before rinsing off or following with your next skin care step
