Roses, All The Way
Wear rose, your way – as we explore the many faces of perfume’s favourite note

The most iconic extract ever to grace the fragrance world, there’s a lot to be said about the humble rose. Some are powerless to its way with romance, and others would prefer it left in the past – but the one thing we can all agree on is that, in perfume, the rose makes an unmistakable impact. Challenging the sweet, feminine and overwhelmingly floral identity it traditionally goes by, look to perfume’s most progressive to find a new kind of rose bouquet.

Diptyque Unleash the Rose Eau Rose
Described as Eau Rose’s elder (and more intense) sister, this limited edition perfume propels Diptyque’s heritage rose blend right into the present. Embellished by LA florist Maurice Harris and perfumer Fabrice Pellegrin, the familiar bouquet of damascene and centifolia roses is brightened by almost edible accents of artichoke, chamomile and lychee, alongside firad: a new, upcycled rose extract taken from the rose distillation water, which usually goes to waste.

Frédéric Malle Rose & Cuir
Veering away from its past reputation, the rose, according to this particular perfume, is far from feminine. With all the makings of a classic cologne, it brings together pepper, geranium and cassis, signalling a new brand of rose that’s best at home in a low-lit cocktail bar. The exterior unravels into sensual heart of bourbon, vetiver, leather and cedar, along with IsoButyl Quinoline – an intensely bitter synthetic molecule, fittingly resurrected from the Jazz Age.

Kilian Roses on Ice
Tapping into the rose’s sharper side, this gin-inspired fragrance is more like a tincture that arrives on the rocks, with a dash of lime, all of its botanical notes deliciously distinguishable: fragrant rose juniper, fresh cucumber and the sharpness of sandalwood and musk.

Le Labo Rose 31
For those still on the fence about the rose’s olfactory merits, let Le Labo step in. A complex blend of rare woods and spices, this rendition is cool, calm and collected; sparkling, with an almost metallic quality, and universal in every sense.

Boy Smells Cinderose Scented Candle
This wouldn’t be a muse on roses without a scent for sharing, and nothing signifies intense passion like the smell of burning rose billowing through your home. This scented candle says love, with a hint of menace – cue overriding notes of smoke, cedar and birch, which temper the floral heart. One for the more eccentric romantics.

Byredo Rose of No Man’s Land
Of course, if it still serves you well, there’s no need to stray too far from the scent you know and love. A tribute to the nurses of World War I, this slightly sweet, delicate floral is a pure and classic depiction of Turkish rose in all its graceful glory; all of its best bits accentuated by hints of pink pepper, raspberry and white amber.
