Waxing lyrical: Liberty and LOEWE
Loewe Perfume’s new wax workshop installation at Liberty London reflects a mutual love of craft, design and horticulture
Visit The Atrium in Liberty London, and you’ll be greeted with a kaleidoscopic new candle display by Spanish house Loewe. Overhead, candles hang from an octagonal wooden structure, as if drying in a traditional wax workshop. Each side of the octagon is dedicated to one of the house’s signature scents, including Ivy, Beetroot, Incense, Roasted Hazelnut, Honeysuckle, Tomato Leaves, Cypress Balls, Wasabi and Mushroom. Beneath the hanging wax, colourful, sculptural plinths display room sprays, fragrances and ceramic candles in various sizes.
The structure is a physical manifestation of Loewe’s values of innovation and craftsmanship, qualities which are reflected in the surroundings of Liberty’s historic Tudor home. After all, the two have a lot in common. Loewe might be slightly older (178 years to Liberty’s 149), but both share a rich history of craft, and, more recently, a love of fragrances inspired by the natural world. Where Liberty’s LBTY. scents evoke magical gardens and botanical notes, at Loewe’s wax workshop, you’ll discover something altogether more herbaceous. Open the terracotta lid of one of their candles and find yourself transported to a vegetable patch filled with aromatic, earthy scents - a ripe tomato, a freshly plucked mushroom, and now spicy wasabi, too.
The latter is the newest fragrance in Loewe’s collection. You might know it best as the green paste that’s served alongside sushi, but wasabi is traditionally made from the ground rootstalks of Eutrema japonicum, a shrub which grows along stream beds in mountainous river valleys. The plant is native to Japan, Korea and the far east of Russia, and the condiment has been prized as a culinary delicacy for over a thousand years.
Now you can enjoy its fresh, peppery piquancy not just on your plate, but also around your home. The wasabi candle joins Loewe’s other flavours in their distinctive ribbed pots, whose design was adapted from a 5th century BC Greek terracotta mug. These colourful containers can also be used as decorative objects or storage once you’ve burned through the candle inside. Alongside the terracotta candles, the fragrance collection is also available in room sprays and statuesque scented candleholders, which melt right down to the base. A perfect gift for any craft collector or green thumb.
