The Synopsis
Great art is always a process of translation. Turning an idea into something tangible for an audience to enjoy; a painting, a piece of music, or even a smell. The
Liberty LBTY. fragrance collection does just that, translating the vast universe of Liberty’s history into seven unforgettable scents. Each fragrance in the collection is based on one of the original Liberty prints, using this as a starting point to explore Liberty’s design archive.
This month, Liberty LBTY. welcomes an eighth fragrance into the collection, the cheeky Vine Thief, inspired by the print of the same name. A woody, fruity scent, Vine Thief brings to mind a garden of sprawling vines where colourful birds hop playfully between the leaves, nibbling on tiny strawberries and twittering in harmony.
The Rise to Fame
To bring the LBTY. collection to life, Liberty invited a group of world-renowned perfumers to design the fragrances. Vine Thief is the creation of Honorine Blanc, known for her ability to craft artfully imperfect yet addictive scents. For Vine Thief, she took the Kings Road in the 70s as her inspiration. It was an era when the punks ruled London, outfitted by Vivienne Westwood and Malcom McLaren who ran a legendary boutique in World’s End.
The Credentials
In this scent, lush florals are paired with creamy notes and smoky leather. With top notes of strawberry liquor and orris, it opens with a powdery, floral smell, drying down to the sweet, velvety notes of musk, vanilla and condensed milk. “Mashing up the edgy leather of punk with a bright, mouthwatering strawberry note,” is how Blanc describes it. “Bringing colour and optimism to the leather irreverence, and a subtle wink to Liberty’s Vine Thief fabric.”
The Star Quality
Alongside the print history, Vine Thief’s ingredients also have their own stories to tell. Did you know that the strawberry scent was inspired by the famous Bonne Maman jam? The sweet and delicious ‘tartine’ staple with its recognizable Vichy check lid. Or that the key ingredient, Orris Absolute, is one of the most expensive raw materials in the word? Extracted from the roots of the iris flower and originating in the Himalayan regions of China, it can cost over 50,000 euros per kilo.
