Read Between the Lines: Here's How to Decorate with Stripes
If you're pattern curious but don't know where to start, a jolly stripe is a perennial design favourite for every room in the home. Here's how to use them well
By: Charlotte Olby
Stripes, be they vertical, horizontal or all in directions, can often feel like a daunting print to tackle – particularly in your wardrobe. But when it comes to home decor, a stripe is a great way to introduce patterns into just about any scheme. There’s no doubt about it, stripes may be having their moment in the spotlight but thanks to their versatile nature, the humble stripe has long been considered a timeless classic in interior design. Whether in a preppy, nautical, minimal or maximal iteration – linear lines can work for just about every style. From deckchair stripes that immediately summon up the spirit of British Summertime or super sweet candy stripes to inject playful personality, there’s arguably a stripe for every home.
Look to transform your space by injecting stripes at every turn – from cushions to coasters – and streamline with paired-back plains, or if you’re feeling bold, clash with heavier patterns like florals or a checkerboard. Really, almost all patterns work with stripes, so don’t be afraid of a stripy mix-and-match. When pattern-pairing consider using a variety of scales to make sure the stripes and patterns work proportionately, like a gentle mix of thin ticking stripes with larger more contemporary widths to avoid looking too overbearing (and making your guests feel dizzy). With sunnier days aplenty, what better time to give your space a seasonal makeover by embracing the cheery nature of stripes with some of our favourite striped home accessories…
