The Jewellery Trends to Wear this Winter

From ancient treasures to candy-like jewels, the Liberty Jewellery Hall is full of irresistible treats

By: George Elliot

In the last few months of the year, festive lights begin to twinkle on the horizon. First comes Halloween, then a few short weeks later, the party season begins. Liberty’s Tudor flagship becomes a glittering haven for the Christmas rush - stocked full of gifts, occasionwear and decorations. For those looking for something extra special, the Jewellery Hall on the Ground Floor is a treasure trove of ideas. For the real magpies, here are some of the trends you’ll find there this season.

The Battered and the Beautiful

Special pieces of jewellery will be passed down through generations, but this season designers seemed to be delving even further into the past, taking inspiration from ancient artefacts and long lost treasure. For Scottish jewellery designer Ellis Mhairi Cameron, her pieces are designed to embody medieval jewellery hoards found across her homeland. Another designer famous for her artfully battered aesthetic is Alighieri, whose pieces are cast using the lost wax method, as if they were buried treasure from a long-lost civilization. For Spanish brand Pdapaola, their textured earrings and ring look like they’ve been soldered into existence by an erupting volcano.

Down to a T

The classic T-bar pendant is a familiar jewellery silhouette, but did you know that the style was first popularised by Prince Albert during the Victorian period? Known as the ‘Albert chain’, the T-bar was used as a device to attach a pocket watch to a vest button hole. Later, during the First World War, it became common for women to wear the watch chains of their loved ones around their neck as a keepsake for those at war. Straddling functionality and decoration, the Albert chain has an eternally modern feel, and the style has remained a classic in jewellery collections to this day.

Long Live Dame Viv

An icon of British fashion and the cool Britannia movement, Vivienne Westwood’s legacy is a punk legend for the ages. No wonder her designs transcend times and trends - as popular with her contemporaries as they are with today’s younger generations, whose taste for y2k nostalgia brought Westwood’s signature pendant jewellery back into the spotlight. Featuring pearls, gems and safety pins, the brand’s instantly recognizable pieces represent both luxury and non-conformity.

Purple Rain

Synonymous with rarity, royalty and magic, the colour purple has always had a certain mystery, namechecked in the song titles of artists like Jimi Hendrix and Prince, the latter of whom was famously a fan of the shade. It’s also a colour that represents creativity - so it’s hardly surprising that it’s Liberty’s signature shade. Eternally intriguing, a purple gemstone or accent is the perfect touch of mystery for any winter outfit.

Gumdrops and Gobstoppers

The expression ‘like kids in a candy shop’ could be applied to jewellery-lovers at Liberty this season, thanks to the number of large, colourful gemstones in the winter collection. Sparkle under the Christmas lights with rings that look like glittering sugary treats, decorated with mouthwatering emeralds, crystal clear aquamarine, brilliant jade stones and translucent cocktail rings.
