Make the most of your wardrobe’s hardest working accessory with these fresh, fashion-forward scarf styling tips and tricks
By: Team LibertyIn theory, we all know how to wear a scarf – just wrap around and go, right? But when it comes to beyond-basic scarf styling techniques, the kind that’ll help to take your outfit to the next level, plenty of imagination and a touch more strategic thinking is required. We’ve taken the (ahem) liberty to carry out the styling legwork for you via one easy, breezy video and our step-by-step tutorials. There’s a scarf styling technique for every dresser – which one suits you?
How to Wear a Scarf
The Adventurer
With your adventurous spirit, you’re always on the go which means ease is key. But that shouldn’t compromise style. Introduce an elegantly tied shawl to your outfit, and away you go...
How to: Fold your scarf into a triangle, then simple swoop around your shoulders with the long side at the back. For added elegance, secure the two loose ends together with an elegant ring.
The Curator
You’re a custodian of refined and perfectly formed pieces. A curator of simple yet effective style, so it's no wonder that a scarf tied neatly around the neck is your signature.
How to: Lying the scarf flat on a surface, simply fold both sides in twice from the outside in, holding the folds in place as you wrap around your neck. Form a loose knot on one side, leaving a few inches of the end of the scarf out. Proceed to loop the other end of the scarf through the knot and pull to your desired length and tightness.
The Maker
You’re a tastemaker. A purveyor of beautiful things. Someone that inspires, rather than follows. So where others see a scarf, you see a whole world of opportunity. Why wouldn’t you transform yours into a top?
How to: Delicately tie two corners of your scarf together to create an opening. Pass this opening over your head and one arm, then rotate the scarf so the knot sits under one arm, and the rest of the scarf flows over the other shoulder. Finally, tie the two remaining corners together to create a voluminous sleeve.
The Composer
A promoter of the Avant-Garde, you invent style and design, drawing inspiration from all the elements around you, which in scarf terms, sees you transform yours into a twisted halter top.
How to: Fold your scarf in half to create a triangle, then, tie a knot in the short pointed end of the triangle. Open the scarf back up to reveal a ruched shape in the centre of the scarf. Next take the top two corners and secure them with a knot around your neck. Finally, secure the scarf around your waist by tying the two remaining corners behind your back.
The Artist
You’re a born artist with an imagination that simply knows no bounds. So suffice to say, we’ve come to expect the unexpected from you. And as for the latest incarnation of your creativity? A bandeau top that defies convention at every turn.
How to: Fold the two opposing corners inwards to create a large triangle, then fold again to create a long rectangle of fabric. Wrap the scarf around your back and simply secure with knot at the front to create your elegant bandeau.
The Bohemian
You're a free spirit at heart, with a taste for the finer things. Show your individual flare by transforming your scarf into an elegant headpiece.
How to: Join two opposite corners of your scarf together to create a triangle. Next, put the scarf over your head so the folded edge sits flat along your forehead. The, simply tie the two opposite ends together and tuck in the point of the triangle so it is secured at the base of your neck.
The Rebel
Sure, tradition is all well and good: but you like to shake things up a little. Why, for instance, would you wear a regular neckscarf, when you could break the mould and do something a little bit different? If that sounds familiar, this delicate rose neck tie is the style for you.
How to: Fold your scarf into a triangle and secure the two opposite ends with a knot. Take the two loose sides of the scarf and wrap around each other to create an elegant rose shape, securing with a knot. Then simply pass the two remaining sides around your neck and secure at the back.
