Interior Motives: Cushion Trends to Try

Something soft and stylish for every aesthetic

Decorating your home is a commitment. It’s the place where you spend most of your time, and the furnishing choices you make will usually last for years. But that doesn’t mean you have to be wedded to the same aesthetic forever. Swapping out your cushions is a simple and effective way to give your space a seasonal refresh (or a whole new look). You’d be surprised how a scattering of soft accessories can transform the personality of a room, or enhance the cosy factor as winter draws near. Here are some ideas to try next time you update your home.

70s Mood

Turn your living room into a glamorous, 1970s-inspired lounge complete with plush textures, earthy tones, ditsy florals and retro prints. Like the musicians who defined the era, this style is all about artistry, self expression and a touch of hedonism. Imagine David Bowie or Elton John sinking into a pile of Liberty cushions after a studio session.

Designer Signatures

Some brands make the logo their hallmark, whilst others are identifiable for a distinct mood or aesthetic. These designers are an example of the latter. Who doesn’t recognise Christian Lacroix’s exuberant baroque style, or Missoni’s multicoloured zig zag pattern? In FornasettiFornasetti’s case, the monochrome face is an emblem of those in the know. For French designer Marin Montagut, his whimsical Parisian illustrations are quickly becoming tastemaker favourites.

Vintage Florals

Botanical illustrations, woodblock prints, pressed flowers and faded photographs - this aesthetic takes its inspiration from a time before technology. Soft, muted tones create a warm, vintage feel, inviting you to relax with a book instead of scrolling on your phone.

Block Colours

By contrast, block colours add a clean, modern edge to any interior, brightening up a room without making it feel busy. Create a colour story with multiple tones, or repeat the same accent around the room for a more stylised look. Block colour cushions are also useful for breaking up prints - try choosing a colour in the print and matching it with a cushion in that shade.

Midnight Glamour

Cosy doesn’t have to mean quaint. Embrace the winter nights with an opulent, moody aesthetic, characterised by rich, velvety textures, gold stitching and tasselled embellishments. Prints and patterns are inspired by the most charismatic and elegant animal species - big cats, peacocks and other rare and beautiful birds.
