Looking for a bauble made with extra love this Christmas? Meet the makers behind our masterfully-made, hand-embroidered decorations
By: Charlotte OlbyWhen it comes to finding a sure-fire way to spruce up your, well, spruce, we think nothing can be as meaningful (or as beautiful) as hand embroidered baubles. On our quest to find the most mesmerising decorations to deck the halls of our famous Christmas Shop, sitting among the very best and most novelty baubles around, we were naturally inspired by our great artisanal heritage to source decorations that are lovingly crafted by skilled artisans for our very own perfectly purple Liberty tree ornaments.
Fusing together a blend of culture and experiences from London to India, our Liberty Christmas decorations are created by a network of 35 home-based master craftspeople from Noida in Northern India. They practise an ancient artform of Zardozi, which originates from 12th century Persia, and refers to the embellishing of fabrics with metal-bound fabrics. The Mughal dynasty brought Zardozi to India in the 16th century where it’s been perfected by generations of exceptionally skilled artisans from the Muslim community. The group of crafters create each piece by hand using the same tools their ancestors used centuries ago. They are greatly proud of their work and view traditional embroidery as an important part of their heritage.
“It is a historical craft and very few authentic artisans remain to carry out this legacy.”
Honouring our long history with craft, these decorations sit among the many Liberty products that are expertly made by skilled artisans (well, we are Liberty after all) and once hung upon your tree – or even wrapped up for gifting – will spread joy for many Christmasses to come. So if you’re looking to add a merry twist to your tree this year, we suggest taking a peek at our Christmas emporium, found on our grand 4th floor.
