From lost loves to signature scents, D.S. & Durga's founders share their hero perfumes and most memorable moments wearing them
By: Shannon PeterFew indie fragrance brands have managed to capture hearts and minds quite like D.S. & Durga. Founded by husband and wife duo David Seth and Kavi Moltz and based in New York City, the brand has become known for creating transportive scents, the kind of unique blends that immerse you in other places, times and emotions, all in a single spritz. But what do such scent visionaries actually wear themselves? We sat down with the pair to find out…
DAVID SETH’S LIFE IN FRAGRANCE
The First Fragrance I Ever Loved Was...
Though I won a bottle of Pierre Cardin at a camp raffle when I was six, it was really the [Ralph Lauren] Polo in the green bottle that did it for me. It made me feel grown up. It smelled like the men around me in New England.

All of the scents I make remind me of the time I made them in. Whether it was travelling or researching or just the time of life that I made them in. I guess our D.S. Fragrance for me captures a feeling I have when reading holy scriptures from India. It reminds me of the timeless essence of India.
My Current Signature Scent Is…
I often wear what I’m working on. But I return to ST. VETYVER a lot. It smells old fashioned but with a modern edge. It’s a classic Caribbean cologne with spicy bay, top grade vetiver, and amber-y vanilla.
The Next Perfume I’d Love to Wear Is…
I am working on many things right now. I am trying out how they work on my skin. A few are very Parisian which is something I’ve never really tried to do (strange as it’s the Mecca of perfume).

The First Fragrance I Ever Loved Was...
Betsey Johnson, the original, in the sphere-shaped bottle with her signature hand drawn flowers on it. The mid 90's was my era and this was a sweet teenage dream. I can't imagine wearing anything this syrupy now, but the idea that my young unjaded heart gravitated toward this sugary juice brings a smile to my face.

On our wedding weekend, David made me three custom scents, one for each major event (Indian weddings!). Each was delivered to me in a cut glass vintage bottle at a different point over the weekend. It was pretty early days in his perfume career, but one of the scents was the most stunning neroli that I wore at our wedding ceremony. It is still my platonic ideal of a neroli fragrance.
My Current Signature Scent Is…
DURGA! Created in a tribute to the tuberose flower, which I find to be the most intoxicating. My late and beloved uncle in Delhi would always leave a fresh bundle of tuberose flowers next to my bed at night, so the room I slept in would be heavy with it.
The Next Perfume I’d Love to Wear Is…
David is working on a new one, a very Parisian scent, that I think I'm going to love.
